American poet Robert Creeley wrote more than sixty books and is a central figure in the poetic tradition associated with Black Mountain, although his aesthetic differs from that group in several respects. His work gained attention with the collection For Love (1962) and includes poems, short stories, and a novel, characterized by concise use of line and by the idea that form arises as an extension of content. A teacher and mentor, he held the Samuel P. Capen Chair in Poetry and the Humanities at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he helped found the Poetics Program in 1991, and he also taught at Brown University. Over his career he received awards and honors including the Bollingen Prize and the Lannan Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, and he served as New York State Poet Laureate. Active in literary communities, he maintained close contacts with figures such as Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, and Robert Duncan, edited and published authors through Divers Press and the journal Origin/Black Mountain Review, and supported younger generations of poets. His reputation rests both on his prolific output and on his pedagogical and editorial influence on the postwar American poetry scene.
