Robert Francis Boyle was a distinguished American art director and production designer whose architecture degree from the University of Southern California shaped his work. Active from the studio era onward, he started as a draftsman at Paramount and became an art director at Universal, earning credits on films that span suspense and musicals. He is best known for his collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock — including North by Northwest, The Birds and Marnie — where he created memorable sets, such as large-scale replicas built to film scenes that could not be shot on location. He also contributed to notable films like The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, Fiddler on the Roof, In Cold Blood and The Thomas Crown Affair, showing technical skill and scenic inventiveness. Across his career he was nominated four times for the Academy Award for Art Direction/Production Design and in 2008 received an Honorary Oscar for his body of work, becoming the oldest winner of an honorary Academy Award. Recognized by the Art Directors Guild with a lifetime achievement award in 1997, he served as an educator at the American Film Institute and remained a touchstone in cinematic set design.
