Robert Walker was an American actor active in the 1940s and early 1950s, known for his charismatic presence in roles as a young soldier and screen heartthrob. He rose to prominence in studio productions such as Bataan (1943), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) and See Here, Private Hargrove (1944), which cemented his “boy-next-door” image and helped drive box-office success of the time. He worked with major figures of classic cinema: he appeared in films produced by David O. Selznick and had roles alongside stars such as Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster. His most remembered performance was as the lead in Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (1951), released shortly before his death. His career was also marked by personal difficulties, including psychiatric treatment and problems with alcoholism, which affected his professional and public life. He married and divorced while rising in Hollywood, a development that attracted press attention at the time. He died in 1951 in circumstances related to the combined use of sedatives and alcohol, cutting short a promising career. His legacy remains in the memory of American cinema as a performer of troubled young figures in popular postwar films.
