Robert Marchand was a French cyclist whose fame grew in his supercentenarian years. Returning to cycling after retirement, he became known for setting hour records in the 100- and 105-year age categories, maintaining averages above 22 km/h and becoming a benchmark among athletes who competed at extraordinary ages. Over his life he held various jobs: a firefighter in Paris in the 1930s, an agricultural worker and merchant during travels that took him to Venezuela, the United States and Canada, and later a driver and gardener. These experiences reflect a varied professional life, also marked by trade-union involvement and membership in the French Communist Party. His comeback to racing after retirement included entries in classics such as Bordeaux–Paris and Paris–Roubaix, as well as long-distance trips like the Paris–Moscow ride he completed at 81. Even after reducing his training on medical advice, he maintained an exercise routine and came to symbolize active longevity in sport. Author of autobiographical works and the focus of media attention in his later years, Marchand died at 109, leaving a legacy linked to physical endurance in old age and to the public example of continued athletic practice.
