Robert Swan Mueller III was an American lawyer and public servant, best known for leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for twelve years (2001–2013). Appointed shortly before the September 11, 2001 attacks, he guided the agency through a major reorganization of national security and counterterrorism efforts, remaining in office on an extended term requested by President Barack Obama. Before the FBI, Mueller built a long career as a federal prosecutor and manager in the Department of Justice, working on investigations of financial fraud, terrorism, narcotics, money laundering and high-profile cases involving figures such as Manuel Noriega and John Gotti.
