Robert Penn Warren was an American writer and literary critic whose work spanned poetry, fiction, and university teaching. A central figure in New Criticism, he co-founded the magazine The Southern Review in 1935 and, with Cleanth Brooks, authored influential textbooks such as Understanding Poetry, which shaped generations of readers and students. His best-known novel, All the King’s Men (1946), earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1947 and became a landmark exploration of political power and populism; the book inspired film and opera adaptations. Over his career he also received top honors in poetry—Pulitzer Prizes in 1958 and 1979—making him the only author to win the award in both fiction and poetry. He taught at major universities, including Yale and Louisiana State University, and played a public role in debates about race: after initially aligning with the Southern Agrarians, he reassessed his views and became a public advocate for integration, compiling interviews with civil-rights leaders in Who Speaks for the Negro?. Acknowledged with awards and institutional honors, he left a lasting legacy as a creator, critic, and shaper of readers in twentieth-century American literature.
