Robert Ritter von Greim was a German military officer and aviator, a First World War ace and a leading figure in the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. He scored 28 aerial victories in the First World War and received decorations such as the Pour le Mérite and the Military Order of Bavaria, which granted him the title Ritter. After the war he earned a law degree and worked in China establishing a flying school before returning to Germany.
In the 1930s he took part in rebuilding Germany’s air force at the invitation of Hermann Göring, directing pilot schools and conducting secret training operations with the Soviet Union. During the Second World War he commanded air formations in campaigns including Poland, Norway, the Battle of Britain and Operation Barbarossa, and received the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.
In April 1945, with Berlin surrounded, he was flown into the capital by Hanna Reitsch and appointed by Hitler himself as commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe, becoming the last German field marshal. Captured by the Allies after the surrender, he committed suicide in May 1945 while detained in Austria.
