Roger Vailland was a French novelist, essayist and playwright whose work crossed the literature and theatre of the twentieth century. He became known for novels such as Drôle de jeu (Interallié Prize), Un jeune homme seul and La Loi, the latter awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1957, which secured his reputation among critics and readers. His output also includes Beau masque, 325 000 francs and La Truite, several plays and numerous essays on literature and history.
Beyond fiction, Vailland served as a war correspondent in 1944–45, an experience that informed his writings on battles and historical figures, and he wrote prefaces and studies on classic authors such as Laclos and Casanova. He also collaborated on plays with Claude Brûlé and Roger Vadim, extending his presence in theatre and screenwriting.
His work reflects an ongoing engagement with the political and cultural contexts of the postwar period, blending social inquiry, historical-literary study and aesthetic reflection. Vailland’s legacy remains relevant for its range of genres and its influence on subsequent French novelists and playwrights.
