Publius Aelius Hadrianus (Publius Aelius Hadrianus) was Roman emperor from 117 to 138, a member of the Antonine dynasty and considered one of the “Five Good Emperors.” Of Hispanic origin, he rose to power by a decision recognized by the Senate and the army after Trajan’s death, in a succession whose legality and circumstances generated controversy. Hadrian abandoned his predecessor’s expansionist policies and focused on consolidating the Empire’s frontiers, withdrawing from recently conquered territories and strengthening military discipline and readiness. Known as a traveling ruler, he visited nearly all the provinces and sought to integrate diverse peoples through administration and public works. He was a major patron of the arts and of Greek culture, promoting Athens as a cultural center and financing temples and buildings; in Rome he rebuilt the Pantheon and erected the Temple of Venus and Rome. He suppressed revolts such as the one in Judea and personally sponsored civil and religious institutions. His relationship with the youth Antinous and the posthumous cult surrounding him became notorious. Hadrian’s legacy combines architectural achievements and centralizing administration with an ambiguous reputation: cultural generosity alongside authoritarian decisions that divided the opinions of his contemporaries and of later historians.
