Roman Herzog was a jurist, professor and German politician affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). A scholar of constitutional law, he held chairs in Munich, Berlin and at the University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer before being appointed a judge of the Federal Constitutional Court, which he led as president from 1987 to 1994. His academic and judicial work established him as an authority on public law and a guarantor of the constitutional order in the Federal Republic of Germany. Elected President of the Republic in 1994, he was the first head of state chosen in the post‑reunification period. During his term (1994–1999) he became known for public speeches that urged reform and for emphasizing historical memory: he established the national day of remembrance for the victims of the Nazi regime on 27 January and, in international meetings, offered apologies for German crimes in Poland. He also acknowledged the persecution suffered by Roma and Sinti under Nazism. After the presidency he took part in European and national commissions, including the European Convention that drafted the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and an inquiry into party financing. He chaired and served on various foundations and cultural institutions, building a legacy of civic engagement and defense of constitutional values.
