Ronald Joseph “Butch” DeFeo Jr. was an American killer who became notorious for the 1974 murders of his parents and four siblings at the family home in Amityville, Long Island. The crime, carried out in the early hours with a Marlin 336C rifle, left six dead and attracted extensive media attention, later inspiring the book and film adaptations of The Amityville Horror. DeFeo, then 23, initially gave investigators contradictory accounts and at one point claimed voices compelled him to kill; the next day he confessed to the murders. At his 1975 trial the defense argued insanity, but the prosecution’s experts maintained that, despite drug use and personality disorder traits, he was aware of his actions. He was convicted of six counts of second‑degree murder and received consecutive sentences that kept him imprisoned for the rest of his life. Over the years DeFeo offered varying accounts of the events, at times blaming others or family members, making his narrative unstable and treated with caution by investigators and researchers. His case remains relevant in studies of familicide and in popular culture because of its links to horror narratives and the media.
