Ross Lomanitz was an American theoretical physicist whose career intersected with several key episodes in twentieth-century physics. He earned a physics degree from the University of Oklahoma and completed his doctorate at Cornell in 1951 under the supervision of Richard Feynman. Lomanitz began his graduate studies at UC Berkeley, where he was a protégé of J. Robert Oppenheimer and worked at the Radiation Laboratory on electromagnetic isotope separation methods during World War II.
His career was marked by political controversy: he was involved in union activities and associated with contemporary communist circles, which led to the loss of his military deferment, his removal from sensitive projects, and appearances before security committees. After the war he finished his doctorate and held a variety of positions outside academia before accepting a faculty appointment in 1962 at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, where he eventually chaired a department and remained until retiring in 1991.
Lomanitz’s legacy combines academic contributions to theoretical physics with a life shaped by the political tensions of the postwar United States. His career is cited in studies of nuclear physics development as well as accounts of security and scientific policy of the period.
