Roy David McMillan was an American professional baseball player, regarded as one of the top defensive shortstops of the 1950s. He played in Major League Baseball from 1951 to 1966, most notably spending nine seasons as the Cincinnati Reds’ starting shortstop, where alongside Johnny Temple he formed one of the decade’s most effective double-play combinations. For his defense he won three Gold Gloves and was selected to two All-Star teams. During his career McMillan led the National League in several defensive categories — fielding percentage, putouts, assists and double plays — and in 1954 set a then-record with 129 double plays in a single season. His consistency allowed him to play more than 150 games in eight seasons and to finish his career with over 2,000 games played. After retiring as a player, McMillan worked as a coach and served as interim manager for clubs such as the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets, in addition to working as a scout. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1971 and is also a member of the Texas and Ohio Halls of Fame, leaving a legacy of defensive excellence at shortstop.
