Rudolf Carnap was a prominent German philosopher of the twentieth century, recognized as one of the leaders of logical positivism and a central figure in the Vienna Circle. Trained in physics and philosophy, he contributed to mathematical logic, the philosophy of science and semantics, seeking to construct formal systems that would make scientific concepts precise and verifiable. His best-known works include Der logische Aufbau der Welt (The Logical Structure of the World, Aufbau), in which he aimed to ground empiricism through a formal construction of scientific terms, and The Logical Syntax of Language, which established him among the logical positivists by addressing the formal structure of scientific languages. He also defended a critique of philosophical pseudo-problems, arguing that many traditional questions arise from a misuse of language. Carnap taught at academic centers in Europe and the United States, notably the universities of Vienna, Prague, Chicago and UCLA. His work opened the way for formal semantics, modal logic and debates about the analytic–synthetic distinction, leaving a lasting legacy in analytic philosophy and the methodology of the sciences.
