Rudolf Höss was an SS officer best known for heading the Auschwitz concentration camp for nearly two years, where he organized and expanded methods of mass extermination during World War II. Under his command the administration and logistics of the genocidal process were strengthened; he supervised the introduction and use of the pesticide Zyklon B in the gas chambers and optimized procedures for incineration and the selection of prisoners. Before arriving at Auschwitz, Höss served in SS punitive units and concentration camps, gaining experience he later applied to creating an industrialized system of murder. In 1944 he led the operation that resulted in the mass murder of Hungarian Jews in Birkenau, an action that increased the scale of killing at Auschwitz. Captured in 1946, he was tried and convicted of crimes against humanity. In testimony and memoirs he acknowledged his responsibility, provided estimates of the number of victims, and described camp procedures. His role is remembered as central to the implementation of the “Final Solution” and as an example of the bureaucratization and professionalization of Nazi genocide.
