Rudolf Ludwig Karl Virchow was a German physician and scientist whose work decisively shaped modern medicine. Regarded as the father of cellular pathology and social medicine, he became known for formulating fundamental principles of pathology in his treatise Cellular Pathology (1858) and for the maxim Omnis cellula e cellula — all cells arise from other cells. As a pathologist, he developed systematic autopsy methods and introduced forensic techniques, including hair analysis, and described and named several diseases and anatomical structures that bear his name.

Also active as an anthropologist, prehistorian and scientific editor, Virchow founded influential societies and journals, including archives that became standard references in pathology and ethnology. He produced more than two thousand writings covering medicine, public hygiene, food inspection and public health, applying scientific knowledge to sanitation policies and hospital organization.

A liberal politician, he took part in public life of the German Empire and worked on social and sanitary initiatives, including organizing field hospitals during the Franco-Prussian War. His work and institutional influence shaped medical practice, pathological research and public health, leaving a lasting legacy in the formation of modern medical sciences.
