Rudolf Khametovich Nureyev was a Russian dancer and choreographer whose technique and stage presence made him an icon of twentieth-century ballet. Regarded as the first male star of dance since Nijinsky, Nureyev was noted both for his virtuosic performances and for revitalizing classical repertory while drawing international attention to Russian ballet. In 1961, while on tour in Paris with the Kirov, he defected from the Soviet Union and applied for asylum; that decision launched his career in the West and made him a central figure in major European companies. His artistic partnership with the much older ballerina Margot Fonteyn became legendary and sustained the popularity of both until Fonteyn’s retirement in 1979. Throughout his career Nureyev also worked as an artistic director and choreographer, premiering and reinterpreting important works, and came to play a leading role on the Parisian scene. He returned to the Soviet Union only at the end of the 1980s and made his final public appearance in 1992. He died in Paris in 1993 of complications related to AIDS.
