Salvador de Madariaga y Rojo was a Spanish diplomat, intellectual and writer whose career spanned the major upheavals of the twentieth century. He held ministerial posts during the Second Republic — including Public Instruction and Fine Arts and Justice — and represented Spain at the League of Nations, building a public career characterized by liberalism and pro‑European views.

He went into exile in the United Kingdom after the start of the Civil War, where he engaged in intensive journalistic and radio work and taught at the University of Oxford. During the Cold War he maintained an anti‑communist stance and remained active in opposition to Francoism, returning to Spain only after the dictator’s death.

A versatile author, he wrote historical and political essays, literary criticism, biographies, novels and poetry in Castilian, French and English. Notable publications address Columbus, Don Quixote and Hispano‑American history; his work combines learning and essayistic reflection and is regarded by scholars as close to interpretive commentary.

Active in the European project, he served as president of the Liberal International and took part in the 1948 Congress of Europe; in 1973 he received the Karlspreis in recognition of his contribution to European construction. A member of literary and scientific academies, he left a legacy as a promoter of intellectual and political dialogue between Spain and Europe.
