Samuel Moore Walton (Kingfisher, March 29, 1918 – April 5, 1992) was the founder of the world's largest retail chain, Wal-Mart, and of another among the largest, Sam's Club. He was the patriarch of the Walton family, one of the richest families in the world.
Then, Sam and his brother Bud decided to found Wal-Mart in 1962, opening their first store in the city of Rogers, in the state of Arkansas, under the name Wal-Mart Discount City.
Two years after its founding, the chain already had 24 stores and revenue of US$12.6 million.
It is currently one of the largest companies in the world (largest by revenue, which reaches about US$256 billion) and the largest in its category within the competitive American market with an 8% market share (larger than Carrefour, Kroger and Royal Ahold combined), operating about 4,900 stores.
Sam died on April 5, 1992, of a form of multiple myeloma.
After his death, his fortune was estimated at US$25 billion. In 2003, after the list of the richest Americans in the world was released, Helen, Alice, Jim, John and Robson Walton — respectively the widow and the children — occupied fourth through ninth positions. With fortunes of US$20.5 billion apiece, the heirs consolidated themselves as the richest family in the world, with a combined net worth of US$102.5 billion.
It was almost the sum of the fortunes of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and Paul Allen, the top three in the ranking at that time.
