Samuel Hahnemann (1755–1843) was a German physician known as the founder of homeopathy. Educated in Erlangen and having worked in centers such as Leipzig and Vienna, he combined clinical work, translations, and chemical investigations that led him to question traditional medical practices and seek alternative treatment methods. Based on observations of the effects of substances such as quinine, Hahnemann formulated the principle of similars — the idea that substances producing certain symptoms in healthy people can, in appropriate doses, treat similar illnesses. He tested remedies on volunteers and compiled these experiments in the work Materia Medica Pura (1811), which became the basis for homeopathic practice. In 1810 he published the first edition of the Organon, a manual that set out his principles and procedures and which he revised repeatedly. His academic and clinical activity, along with numerous writings on chemistry, pharmacology, and therapeutics, established a school of followers and practices that profoundly influenced medical debates in the nineteenth century. Hahnemann’s legacy is controversial but undeniably influential: his methods gave rise to an internationally spread therapeutic system and a large body of literature and tradition in alternative practice.
