Samuel R. Delany is an American writer whose work spans fiction—especially science fiction—memoir, literary criticism and essays on literature, sexuality and society. He rose to prominence in the 1960s with innovative novels and short stories, including Babel-17 and The Einstein Intersection, both Nebula winners, and with influential works such as Nova, Dhalgren and the Return to Nevèrÿon series. His fiction is marked by formal experimentation and sustained reflection on identity and language.

In addition to his fiction, Delany has an extensive body of nonfiction, including books such as Times Square Red, Times Square Blue and About Writing, as well as essay collections that engage with literary theory and sexuality studies. He has received multiple major science fiction awards—among them four Nebulas and two Hugos—and career honors such as the SFWA Grand Master title and induction into several literary academies and centers.

As a teacher, he taught English, comparative literature and creative writing at public American universities for four decades, helping to train generations of writers and scholars. Born and raised in Harlem, his personal and intellectual life engages with African American history and with the cultural debates of recent decades, leaving a lasting legacy in Anglophone literature and literary criticism.
