Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English poet, critic, and essayist, a central figure in the emergence of Romanticism in England alongside William Wordsworth. He became famous for iconic poems such as The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, and Christabel, works that signaled a renewal of English poetry at the end of the eighteenth century. His work as a prose writer was also important: Biographia Literaria (1817) collects essays and critical notes that influenced literary theory and the aesthetic debate of his time. In addition to his creative output, Coleridge stood out as a lecturer and critic, helping to spread philosophical ideas, such as those of Kant, in the United Kingdom. Coleridge’s personal life—marked by health problems, opium addiction, a troubled marriage, and financial difficulties—affected his career but did not diminish his influence: writers such as De Quincey, Byron, and Shelley acknowledged his impact. His work was edited and anthologized across the twentieth century in critical editions that consolidated his canonical position in English literature. Coleridge is remembered both for the imaginative intensity of his poems and for his contributions to literary criticism, a legacy that shaped subsequent generations of writers and scholars.
