Santiago Ramón y Cajal was a physician, histologist, and one of the principal founders of modern neuroscience. A professor and director at Spanish institutions, he devoted himself to studying the fine structure of the nervous system and proposed the neuron doctrine — the idea that the nervous system is composed of individual cells (neurons) that communicate via specialized connections, synapses. This concept contrasted with the then-dominant reticular view and transformed the understanding of neural organization. Using the staining technique developed by Camillo Golgi, Cajal described neuronal morphology in detail and introduced the concept of the growth cone to explain how axons are guided during development. He published more than a hundred papers and reference works on the histology and anatomy of the nervous system, including seminal texts at the end of the nineteenth century. For his contributions to neuroanatomy he received the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, shared with Golgi. His scientific legacy — methods, drawings, and theories about neuronal organization and development — remains central to neurological research and to training in the neurosciences.
