Sara Simeoni is one of the greatest female high jumpers in the history of Italian athletics. A specialist in the high jump, she ranked among the world leaders in the 1970s and 1980s, winning the Olympic gold medal in Moscow in 1980 and two Olympic silver medals (Montreal 1976 and Los Angeles 1984). In 1978 she became the world record holder with a jump of 2.01 m, a mark she equalled twice that year, and she won the 1978 European Championship. Throughout her career she collected continental and university titles: four European indoor titles, one gold and two bronze medals at the European Championships outdoors, two Universiade victories and successes at the Mediterranean Games. She dominated the national scene for many years, winning multiple Italian championships and setting a national record that stood for 36 years. Known for her technique and determination, she adopted the Fosbury style early in her career and maintained sporting rivalries with prominent international jumpers. After retiring from competition she remained involved in the sport: she held institutional positions in the regional FIDAL, took part in events and programs connected to the Olympic movement and received honors such as inclusion in the Walk of Fame dello sport italiano. Simeoni’s legacy combines top-level results, technical pioneering and lasting visibility in Italian athletics, inspiring subsequent generations of jumpers.
