Scipione Ammirato was an Italian Renaissance writer, historian, and philosopher, noted for his influence on modern political thought. Born into a noble family in Lecce that was devoted to classical philology and scholarship, he worked in cultural centers such as Naples, Rome, Venice, and Florence, where he was appointed official historian of the state by Grand Duke Cosimo I. He took an active part in literary academies and maintained contacts with leading humanists and writers of his time. His best-known work is Discorsi sopra Cornelio Tacito (1594), a political study that promoted reading Tacitus as an alternative to Machiavellianism. In that work Ammirato defends a doctrine of raison d’État that asserts a compatibility between exceptional public interest and natural and divine law, rejects the instrumentalization of religion by power, and condemns arbitrary rule driven by glory or private gain. The book enjoyed wide circulation and several European translations, helping revive interest in Tacitus and influencing political debates in Italy and beyond. His concise, learned style and his effort to reconcile Christian morality with effective statecraft earned him a significant place in the history of political thought at the end of the sixteenth century.
