Serge Reggiani was a Franco-Italian actor and singer whose career spanned theatre, film and the French chanson, in which he became a leading interpreter. Born in Reggio Emilia in 1922, he moved to France with his family during childhood; he began working in theatre in the 1940s, appearing alongside figures such as Jean Marais and in productions of Jean Cocteau, and he joined the Resistance during the occupation. On stage he won notable recognition for Jean-Paul Sartre’s Les Séquestrés d’Altona.
In cinema he appeared in around one hundred films between 1946 and 1998, collaborating with directors such as Marcel Carné, Max Ophüls, Luchino Visconti, Claude Chabrol and Ettore Scola; credits include Les Portes de la nuit, Manon, The Leopard and Les Misérables. Despite this productivity, his artistic peak came through music.
From 1964, encouraged by figures like Jacques Canetti and Simone Signoret, Reggiani launched a singing career, first recording Boris Vian and becoming known for setting poets and lyricists to music — from Vian to Prévert and Rimbaud — and for performing songs by authors such as Georges Moustaki and Serge Gainsbourg. His restrained delivery and baritone timbre made him one of the most acclaimed interpreters of the chanson in the following decades.
His personal life was marked by tragedies and recoveries: the loss of his son in the 1980s led him into depression and alcoholism, from which he recovered with the support of friends and music. In the 1990s he also devoted himself to painting and continued performing until his death in 2004.
