Sheila E. (Sheila Cecelia Escovedo) is an American singer, drummer, and percussionist known for her versatility and for collaborations with artists such as Prince, Lionel Richie, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Beyoncé, and Ringo Starr. The daughter of percussionist Pete Escovedo, she grew up in a musical environment that propelled her early: by age 20 she had already performed with established figures in jazz, soul, and pop.
Her partnership with Prince, which began in the late 1970s, was decisive for her international profile. She took part in the Purple Rain sessions, supplied vocals on tracks like "Let's Go Crazy," and achieved solo success in 1984 with "The Glamorous Life," which earned nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards and the Grammys.
In the 1980s and 1990s she released several albums — including The Glamorous Life, Romance 1600, and Sex Cymbal — and joined tours and film and television projects. She also served as musical director and drummer in Prince’s backing band and collaborated with artists across genres, from pop to jazz.
Over the course of her career, Sheila E. established herself as a leading female percussionist and left a legacy through both her live performances and her ability to move between roles as soloist, arranger, and sidewoman on major contemporary music productions.
