Sheila Patricia Violet Sherlock was a distinguished British physician and educator, recognized as the leading contributor to hepatology in the 20th century. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, she early established herself through clinical and laboratory research on hepatitis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy and ascites, earning an MD with a thesis on the liver and aspiration biopsy. In 1959 she became the first woman to hold a professorship in medicine in the United Kingdom when she took the chair at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, where she founded and led a liver unit that drew clinicians and researchers from around the world. Under her leadership studies addressed bilirubin metabolism, haemochromatosis, cholestasis, autoimmune liver diseases, drug‑induced liver injury and the role of biopsy in clinical practice. A clear and prolific author, she published more than 600 papers and the reference textbook Diseases of the Liver and Biliary System. Co‑founder and president of the International Association for the Study of the Liver and founder of societies and trusts devoted to liver disease, she received numerous honors and honorary degrees and was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Her legacy endures in clinical training and research on liver disease.
