Shirley Conran was an English author, journalist and designer whose career spanned journalism, popular fiction and educational activism. As women's editor of the Daily Mail she launched the Femail section and also held an editorial role at The Observer, breaking with traditional domestic topics and opening space for issues of broader interest to women. Her journalistic career was interrupted by illness, which she turned into a book—Superwoman (1975) became a pop-feminist anthem and popularized the maxim “Life’s too short to stuff a mushroom.” In fiction, Conran achieved wide notoriety with Lace (1982), an international bestseller and example of the so-called bonkbuster, which was adapted as a miniseries in the United States. The commercial success established her as a prominent figure in British popular culture of the 1980s. Later, Conran devoted herself to promoting mathematical education for women, founding initiatives and institutions aimed at combating math anxiety. In recognition of this work she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Her work left a varied legacy: from renewing women’s journalism to mass-market fiction and educational activism.
