A monarch of the House of Vasa, Sigismund III Vasa ruled the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1587 to 1632 and was also King of Sweden (1592–1599) before being deposed by his uncle’s Protestant supporters. Raised Catholic and maternally connected to the Jagiellon tradition, he sought to restore and expand Catholic influence across the vast realm he governed, supporting the Jesuits and Counter-Reformation measures. Under his reign the Commonwealth reached moments of prestige and expansion: intervention during the Time of Troubles in Russia led to the occupation of Smolensk and even Moscow, and military campaigns in the southeast contributed to the weakening of the Ottoman Empire. At the same time, his insistence on centralizing power and undermining the aristocratic parliament produced internal tensions and rivalries that helped sow future problems. A patron of the arts and architecture, Sigismund left an ambiguous legacy: he brought prosperity and cultural achievements, including the partial transfer of political life to Warsaw, but also political and religious controversies that marked his historical memory. He is remembered as an emblematic figure of Poland’s Golden Age, though contested for his authoritarian methods.
