John Pierpont Morgan (Hartford, April 17, 1837 — Rome, March 31, 1913) was an American banker, financier, and art collector. He was the son of Junius Spencer Morgan (1813–1890), who was a partner of George Peabody and the founder of the firm J. S. Morgan & Co. in London.
He dominated corporate finance and industrial consolidation in his time. In 1892, Morgan arranged the merger of Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston Electric Company to form General Electric. After financing the creation of the Federal Steel Company, he merged in 1901 with the Carnegie Steel Company and several other steel and iron firms, including the Consolidated Steel and Wire Company held by William Edenborn, to form the United States Steel Corporation.
His name is the origin of the bank name JPMorgan Chase, resulting from the merger between J.P. Morgan & Co. and Chase Manhattan Bank.
He led the banking coalition that stopped the Panic of 1907. He was the leading financier of the Progressive Era, and his dedication to efficiency and modernization helped transform American companies.
