Stan Smith is a former American professional tennis player, regarded as one of the sport’s leading figures of the 1970s. He reached world No. 1 and won two Grand Slam singles titles, at the US Open in 1971 and at Wimbledon in 1972. He also excelled in doubles alongside Bob Lutz, forming one of the most successful partnerships in the sport’s history. During his career he captured significant tour titles and won year‑end championships, including the inaugural Dallas WCT Finals in 1970 and again in 1973. In 1972 he was named Player of the Year by several rankings and panels of journalists. Before turning professional, he was a collegiate champion at USC, where he earned All‑American honors three times. After retiring, Smith moved into administrative and teaching roles: he served as president of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and worked as a coach and administrator, in addition to cofounding a tennis academy in Hilton Head. Off the court, his name became a global brand when it was used for an Adidas tennis shoe line that remains a cultural icon beyond competitive play.
