Stephen A. Douglas was a prominent Illinois politician and jurist, a central figure in the Democratic Party from the 1840s through the 1860s. Known by the nickname “Little Giant,” he built influence as a congressman and senator, chairing the Committee on Territories and playing a decisive role in shaping policy on the expansion and organization of new American territories. His legislative work included contributions to the Compromise of 1850, intended to ease disputes over slavery, and most notably authorship of the Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854), a measure that reopened controversy by allowing local decision on slavery and precipitated political and social conflict in the region. Those events helped spur the emergence of the Republican Party. Douglas contested the 1858 Senate seat against Abraham Lincoln—defeating him after a series of famous public debates—and was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1860, losing to Lincoln in an election marked by the party’s split between northern and southern factions. A proponent of popular sovereignty, his stance on slavery was a source of controversy. When the Civil War broke out, he supported preservation of the Union, but he died in 1861 shortly after the conflict began.
