Steve Beshear is an American lawyer and Democratic politician who served as the 61st governor of Kentucky from 2007 to 2015. Earlier he held several statewide posts: member of the state legislature (1974–1980), attorney general (1980–1983) and lieutenant governor (1983–1987). A graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law, he built an early career as a consumer advocate and worked on issues such as environmental protection and improvements in neonatal health. As attorney general, Beshear attracted attention for his interpretations of U.S. Supreme Court decisions, directing the removal of copies of the Ten Commandments from state classrooms, and he maintained a profile as a watchdog of public administration. His term as lieutenant governor included creation of the Kentucky Tomorrow Commission, focused on proposals for the state’s future development. After a two-decade hiatus in private practice and an unsuccessful 1996 Senate bid, he returned to politics in 2007 and won the governorship, being reelected in 2011. His administration was noted for measures to finance social programs; his tenure ended in 2015 due to term limits. His political legacy includes continued influence in state affairs, reflected in the election of his son, Andy Beshear, as governor in 2019.
