Steve Cauthen is a retired American jockey, known for an early and striking career in Thoroughbred racing. Emerging in the United States in the 1970s, he made his mark by becoming, in 1977, the first jockey to earn more than US$6 million in a single year and, the following year, by winning the American Triple Crown aboard Affirmed—an achievement that made him the youngest winner of the series and earned him Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.
Having difficulty maintaining weight on the American circuit, Cauthen moved his career to Europe, where he enjoyed exceptional success. He is the only jockey to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Epsom Derby, and he was champion jockey in Britain three times. Over his career he accumulated victories in English, French, Italian and Irish classics, including multiple wins in the Derby, the Oaks and the St. Leger.
After retiring from race riding, Cauthen returned to Kentucky and began running a stud farm. His sporting legacy has been recognized in specialist rankings, placing him among the best jockeys of the 20th century, and he is remembered for the rare combination of early success in the U.S. and sustained achievement on the European circuit.
