Steven Gregory Stayner was a kidnapping victim whose case drew widespread attention in the United States and prompted legislative changes. At seven years old he was abducted in Merced, California, by Kenneth Parnell and held for seven years in various locations, during which he was sexually abused and had his identity falsified. During that time Parnell presented him as his son, changed his name, and moved him frequently. At 14, Stayner managed to escape, taking with him another boy, five-year-old Timothy White, and led him to a police station, resulting in Parnell’s arrest and the boys’ reunification with their families. The case revealed failures in investigations and legal gaps of the period: many sexual offenses were not prosecuted because of jurisdictional issues or statutes of limitations. After returning home, Stayner struggled to readjust to family life and routine, a subject he addressed in public interviews. The episode had a social impact by prompting debates about child protection, the accountability of accomplices, and reforms to state criminal laws.
