Sue Grafton was an American novelist of crime fiction and a screenwriter, best known for the "Alphabet" series, starring private investigator Kinsey Millhone. She graduated in English Literature from the University of Louisville and worked in Hollywood writing scripts for television and film before dedicating herself to crime fiction. In 1982 she began the series whose each volume’s title follows the letters of the alphabet in sequence, beginning with A is for Alibi. The stories are set in the fictional city of Santa Teresa, inspired by Santa Barbara, and use a deliberately slower treatment of time than chronological real time, which preserved the setting and the continuity of the plots across decades. Grafton received several awards for her work on the series, including multiple Shamus Awards and the Ross Macdonald Literary Award, recognizing her contribution to contemporary crime literature. Her work achieved both commercial and critical success, establishing her as a prominent figure in the genre. She maintained ties between Louisville and California throughout her life and left an influential legacy in the modern crime novel tradition, with central female characters and a procedural approach that inspired readers and subsequent writers.
