Surya Bonaly is a former French figure skater known for a distinguished competitive career in the 1990s. A specialist in ladies' singles, she won three World silver medals (1993–1995), five European titles and nine national championships, and represented France at three Winter Olympics (1992, 1994 and 1998). Her technical skill and daring on jumps drew international attention and placed her among the main rivals of skaters such as Oksana Baiul and Chen Lu.
Bonaly became notable for performing unconventional acrobatic moves in competition; in Nagano 1998 she executed a backflip, the only such jump ever performed at the Olympics, and she attempted quadruple jumps in competition at a time when most of her rivals had not. Her career was also marked by serious injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon in 1996, which affected part of her career.
Beyond her results, her relationship with judging and with the federation generated controversy: Bonaly expressed dissatisfaction with arbitration decisions and positions she considered unfair. Her legacy is that of a technical, combative and singular athlete whose presence helped push the boundaries of women's skating.
