Susan Leigh Smith is an American who was convicted of the murder of her two sons, Michael (3) and Alexander (1), in 1994. The crime — which consisted of restraining the children in their car seats and allowing the vehicle to roll into John D. Long Lake in South Carolina — drew international attention because of the initial false claim that a Black man had kidnapped them during an attempted robbery.

The case prompted an extensive police investigation and wide media coverage. At trial, the defense argued that Smith suffered from severe mental health problems, including major depression and dependent personality disorder, and presented expert testimony. The prosecution, meanwhile, argued that the homicides were committed to enable a new romantic relationship.

In 1995 she was convicted and received two concurrent life sentences, with the possibility of parole after 30 years; her first parole request was denied in 2024. The episode also sparked debates about racialized media coverage and the credibility of victims who report crimes, and it has been referenced in television productions and discussions of journalistic ethics.
