A civil engineer by training and a public figure in Peru, Susana Higuchi became known as first lady from 1990 to 1994 during the government of Alberto Fujimori, to whom she was formerly married. The daughter of Japanese immigrants, she graduated from the National University of Engineering and moved from the role of first lady to that of a vocal critic of her husband’s government.
After their break and her allegations of personal abuse and irregularities in the presidential administration, Higuchi sought direct involvement in politics. She attempted to run for Congress in 1995 but had her candidacy rejected; inter-American bodies later recognized that her rights had been violated in that case.
In 2000 she was elected a deputy for Lima with the Independent Moralizing Front, becoming the first former Peruvian first lady to hold an office won by popular vote. Her time in parliament coincided with key moments in the collapse of the Fujimori regime, when public corruption allegations came to the fore.
Throughout her parliamentary career she maintained a critical and independent stance, later leaving the caucus that had elected her. Her career is remembered for breaking with power and for her direct participation in debates on ethics and governance in the country.
