Susanne Albrecht is a former German militant known for her participation in the Red Army Faction (RAF), an extreme-left organization active in West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. Born into a wealthy Hamburg family, she studied sociology at the University of Hamburg and became involved in radical political groups and urban squatter movements, gradually moving toward armed militancy. Albrecht took part in the group's notorious actions: she was among those involved in the kidnapping that resulted in the murder of banker Jürgen Ponto in 1977, and in 1979 she participated in a failed attempt on the life of NATO commander Alexander Haig in Belgium. After training at a Palestinian camp in Yemen, in 1980 she sought refuge in East Germany, where she lived under a false identity and worked as a translator under the protection of the Stasi. Following German reunification she was identified and arrested in 1990; she was subsequently convicted and released before serving her full sentence. In recent years, reports indicate she has taught German to immigrant children under an assumed name. Her life is frequently cited in discussions of the political tensions and domestic terrorism of postwar Germany.
