Thomas Edward Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia (Lawrence da Arábia), was a British archaeologist, soldier, intelligence agent, diplomat and writer.

He became famous for his role as a British liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916–1918. He was called up to the British Armed Forces at the beginning of World War I and in 1917 was officially assigned to the Hejaz expeditionary force under the command of General Wingate, being transferred in 1918 to General Allenby's staff.

It was as a lieutenant in the British Secret Service that Lawrence began, in 1914, his military career in the Middle East. Lawrence's identification with the Arab cause, cultivated while he was still working as an archaeologist, made him an important part of the British maneuver to defeat the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany in the war. As a British officer and admirer of Arab culture, he drew close to Faiçal, one of the leaders of the revolt and son of the Sharif of Mecca, Huceine ibne Ali. His knowledge of the local geography and of the Turkish army, together with the ideals of Arab national sovereignty, soon won over Faiçal and made Lawrence the logistical adviser to the movement, commander of an army of ten thousand men.

A great organizer, he managed to reverse the occupation of Arab territory, preventing Turkish retaliation, through guerrilla actions such as blowing up trains and railways and destroying material reserves, which culminated in the capture of Damascus in October 1918. That year, Lawrence was promoted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
