American actor T. R. Knight rose to prominence for his portrayal of Dr. George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy (2005–2009; return in 2020), a role that earned him a 2007 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. His theatrical training began early at the Guthrie Theater and the Children’s Theatre Company, and a move to New York established a solid stage career with notable Broadway and Off‑Broadway appearances such as Noises Off (2001) and Boy (2004), as well as Drama Desk nominations.
On screen, beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Knight has appeared in various television series and productions, including recurring roles on 11.22.63 and voice work for contemporary animation. After leaving Grey’s Anatomy he returned to the theater in projects like A Life in the Theatre (2010) opposite Patrick Stewart and portrayed characters in musicals and staged readings.
Offstage and offscreen, his public profile was also shaped by his coming out during the show’s run; he later married dancer and writer Patrick B. Leahy. Knight’s career is characterized by a continuous movement between theater and television, with critical recognition for dramatic roles and contributions to LGBT representation in the media.
