Terence Chi-Shen Tao is a mathematician of Australian and American background, recognized for deep contributions to harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, combinatorics, and analytic number theory. A professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he holds the James and Carol Collins Chair and became known for the breadth of his interests and his capacity for collaboration, accumulating dozens of coauthors over his career. Among his achievements is, together with Ben Green, the proof of the Green–Tao theorem (2004), which guarantees the existence of arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions of prime numbers. Tao has also produced significant advances on classical problems, including results on variants of the Navier–Stokes problem, the resolution of Erdős’s discrepancy problem (2015), progress on the Collatz problem (2019), and contributions to the study of the de Bruijn–Newman constant (2018). Internationally recognized, he received the Fields Medal in 2006, as well as awards such as the Royal Medal and the Breakthrough Prize (2014) and a MacArthur Fellowship (2006). He is a member of prestigious scientific academies and societies, and his legacy includes both high-impact technical results and a collaborative body of work that has influenced several areas of contemporary mathematics.
