Terry Cole-Whittaker was a prominent figure in the New Thought movement in the United States, known as an author, minister, and leader of spiritual self-help movements. Trained in divinity and ordained by the United Church of Religious Science in the 1970s, she turned a small congregation in La Jolla into a large public center, attracting thousands to services and expanding the work to include a school, a teaching center, and media programs. In the 1980s Cole-Whittaker gained national visibility with a widely syndicated television program and bestselling books, including a title that appeared on the New York Times list. Her message emphasized personal prosperity and self-development, and her community included several celebrities among its participants. In 1982 she founded Terry Cole-Whittaker Ministries and, faced with financial difficulties and changes in the ministerial structure, reoriented her activity by creating Adventures in Enlightenment, an organization that ran international retreats, courses, and projects such as an organic farm and an ashram in India. Her legacy remains linked to the spread of spiritual practices focused on individual empowerment and to the popularization of New Thought in the late twentieth century.
