Tex Beneke (Gordon Lee Beneke) was an American saxophonist, singer and bandleader whose career was closely linked to Glenn Miller. He rose to prominence as the tenor soloist in the Glenn Miller Orchestra from the late 1930s until the band’s disbandment in 1942, appearing on recordings and in films of great impact, including the versions of “In the Mood” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” the latter featuring Beneke on vocals. During World War II Beneke served in military bands and, after the war, took official leadership of the Glenn Miller “ghost band,” authorized by the maestro’s estate. Under his baton the orchestra revived the repertoire and sound inherited from Miller, featured notable musicians and arrangers—among them Henry Mancini and Norman Leyden—and performed in major venues and tours across the United States. Beneke is also remembered for developing singers and instrumentalists who passed through the orchestra and for being cited as one of the leading blues singers of the big‑band era. His legacy is tied both to Miller’s iconic recordings and to preserving the orchestral swing tradition in the decades that followed.
