Thelma Morgan (known as Thelma Furness during her second marriage) was an American socialite of Swiss descent from the influential Morgan family. She became a noted figure in high society and among courted circles in the 1920s and 1930s, both because of her family ties—she was the twin sister of Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt—and because of marriages to prominent men, including Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness, from whom she acquired the title of Viscountess. Her name entered political and social chronicles when she had a relationship with the then Prince of Wales, the future Edward VIII; that involvement preceded the prince’s famed relationship with Wallis Simpson. Thelma accompanied Edward on trips and safaris and is remembered as one of his closest companions during that phase of his public life. The daughter of an American diplomat, she cultivated transatlantic connections that reinforced her role as a prominent international society figure between the wars. Although her marriage to Furness ended in divorce, she remained associated with the British aristocratic circle and with the historical narrative surrounding the king’s abdication. Her life was marked by presence in the social and cultural centers of early twentieth-century power, leaving a legacy chiefly as an influential figure in salons and intimate relationships that affected public episodes of European royalty.
