Theodor Lessing was a German philosopher, essayist, and cultural critic of Jewish origin, noted for his intellectual activity during the Weimar Republic. Trained in philosophy with a dissertation on Afrikan Spir, he worked as a teacher, theatre critic, and organizer of cultural initiatives such as the Volkshochschule in Hannover. He became a public figure through writings critical of nationalism and the militarization of society, and for his pacifist positions during and after World War I. His best-known work is Der jüdische Selbsthaß (1930), in which he examines the phenomenon of Jewish intellectuals who repudiated Judaism, and the essay Geschichte als Sinngebung des Sinnlosen (published in 1919), which addresses the construction of historical meaning from a Nietzschean perspective. Controversial references to figures such as Hindenburg and exposures like his investigation of the serial killer Fritz Haarmann increased his notoriety and provoked strong public antagonism. With the rise of Nazism, his political positions and his Zionism made him a target of persecution; he went into exile in Marienbad, where he was murdered in August 1933 by Nazi sympathizers from the Sudetenland. His legacy remains tied to criticism of antisemitism, reflection on Jewish identity, and public debate in Germany’s turbulent 1920s.
