Theodor Mommsen was a German historian, jurist, and philologist whose work transformed the study of Roman antiquity. Best known for the monumental History of Rome and for continuing the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, Mommsen systematized epigraphic and legal sources, establishing critical methods that still guide research in ancient history and Roman law. His training in jurisprudence led him to link law and history closely; he prepared essential editions such as the Corpus Iuris Civilis and the Codex Theodosianus, and contributed to philological and editorial projects across Europe, including editions of patristic texts and studies of the Roman limes. A pioneer of epigraphy, he promoted the method of autopsy in verifying inscriptions. Author of more than 1,500 works and principal editor of numerous volumes of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902 for his mastery of historical writing. His legacy endures in the critical infrastructure he left for classical studies, for jurists and historians, and in his lasting influence on the historiography of the Roman world.
