Thomas Hobbes was a 17th-century English philosopher whose work helped shape modern political philosophy. He is best known for Leviathan (1651), in which he developed an influential version of social contract theory and argued for the necessity of a strong sovereign power to restrain the “war of all against all” and preserve order. His ideas about the state of nature and the laws of nature influenced subsequent debates over political legitimacy and authority. Intellectually eclectic, Hobbes also worked in mathematics, physics, history, theology and classical translation, projecting himself as a polymath. His travels through Europe and contact with scientific figures such as Galileo influenced his mechanistic approach to the study of the body and society, which he sought to unify in a systematic work on Body, Man and State. The English Civil War reinforced his defense of an absolutist sovereign as a response to social instability. Earlier and contemporary works to Leviathan — such as De Cive, De Corpore and De Homine — expanded his system. Despite controversies, including accusations of atheism, Hobbes left a lasting legacy in European political, legal and ethical thought.
